Abstract

fetched live from OpenAlex

This Quarter's Book Review is written by Ghery Pettit. I asked Ghery to write about a classic book that he consulted regularly and showed evidence of continued use through either a broken binding, (at least some) “dog eared” pages, or extensive marginal notes. Before I finished asking, he had accepted and selected Ramo Whinnery and Van Duzer's book. Of course, I have also made considerable use of this book myself, so a conversation was started. In fact, while Ghery points this out in his review, I have used the book as a text for my courses (and certainly my choice has been questioned by students, just like Ghery did). But, as noted by Ghery, the value of the book lasts much longer than the course for which it is required. Please enjoy reading the review; the book is a classic and has stood the test of time. If you add it to your library and use it in your work, you will not regret the purchase.

Fetched live from OpenAlex and de-inverted. Abstracts are not stored in this database: the inverted indexes are 8.6 GB of the frame’s 9.3 GB of text, and the host has 13 GB free.

Not calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. The Gemma side is a direct model label for every work in the frame, read from the title-only record. The Codex side is a classifier learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and calibrated to design-weighted sample rates; fields without enough sample support carry no Codex call. Candidate is the union of the two sides; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels.

Machine scores (provisional)

The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.

Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
