C’est avec une fascination croissante que Roger Caillois repère son œuvre, pourtant hétéroclite et éparse, voire incongrue, contenue comme en puissance en quelques-unes de ses expériences infantiles. Retraçant leur parcours, le présent article montre comment la mise en récit de ce qui surgit à rebours comme un destin organise, à travers la mise à jour d’un affrontement ambivalent au maternel, l’imaginaire et la poétique cailloisienne, et aboutit au dernier oxymore de son œuvre, celui d’un inceste éthique.
