Due italiani, Giovanni Caboto ed Enrico Tonti, entrambi originari della cittadina di Gaeta hanno grande rilievo nella storia del Canada e del Nord America, anche se le vicende storiche li hanno fatti agire rispettivamente sotto la bandiera inglese e la bandiera francese.Giovanni Caboto?fu il primo navigatore europeo a giungere sulle coste atlantiche del Canada; Enrico Tonti è stato protagonista dell'ampliamento verso ovest e verso sud di quel possedimento francese a lungo chiamato Nouvelle France.Nelle moderne enciclopedie italiane non si trova il nome di Enrico Tonti.Egli viene soltanto citato dalla Enciclopedia Italiana della Treccanis, dove, alla voce relativa al grande esploratore francese René Robert de La Salle4, di cui Tonti è stato luogotenente, viene indicato, con una affermazione del tutto errata, come "piemontese"5.Nelle moderne enciclopedie
