Abstract
While more scrupulous editing would have complemented The Fate of Olives considerably, its many virtues amply outweigh the oversights.Serving as an added dimension, Militano's poetry plays a fine counterpoint to his prose: often, where the prose provides an account, it is in the poems where Militano broadens the feelings and emotions called up in him and in the reader: "The cool night comes down from the mountains./ The village is silent as a solitary animal / [...] / Here is this other beginning / piazza empty and still / here my mother as a child sleeps / The village fountain never stopping" (26).Finally, the half dozen or so photographs of people and memorabilia combine beautifully with Militano's writing to conjure up a symphony of nostalgia in the reader for these people and places, almost as though one had known and loved them personally.
