Dopo l' unificazione della penisola italiana verso il 1870, iniziò l'esodo di massa dei suoi ceti meno abbienti verso le Americhe.L' Argentina, il Brasile il Venezuela e gli Stati Uniti furono le mete preferite degli emigranti italiani i quali si diressero in numero inferiore anche in Canada ed in particolare a Montreal che era la città più importante del paese ed il centro della rivoluzione industriale.Gli studi del Ramirez e della Taschereau, con dati statistici di prima mano attinti dai registri parrocchiali, dimostrano che furono i molisani ed i campani, i casertani in modo più preciso, a formare il primo nucleo permanente di quella che è diventata la comunità d'origine italiana di Montreal che consiste di oltre 200, 000 persone al giorno d'oggi.La culla della colonia italiana di Montreal è stata la strada St.Timothée, poco distante dal porto, nella parte Est della città, dove vivevano intorno al 1875 diverse famiglie originarie tutte dello stesso paese: Ripabottoni in provincia di Campobasso.Nel 1885 gli Italiani residenti erano saliti a circa 2000 e verso l'inizio del nostro secolo la cifra era salita ad oltre 5.000, sicchè le autorità religiose cattoliche franco-canadesi ritennero opportuno acccedere alla richiesta di costituire una parrocchia nazionale italiana.Il decreto venne firmato il 3 novembre 1905 dall'arcivescovo di
