Abstract

fetched live from OpenAlex

As the end of the second millennium approached, way way back (two years ago), the thoughts of literary critics turned to lists.Who is the best writer of the decade?Of the century?Of the last one thousand years?Quandaries of this sort seemed to trouble the sleep of newspapers and magazine editors, directors of TV stations, of almost anyone who was anyone or anything. In Italy some individual in the information industry brilliantly decided it was best to proceed soccer-style.Four dozens or so major European and non-European writers were chosen. They were then divided in pools, with the readers being asked to indicate their preferences. The authors at the top two places in each group moved on to the next stage, squaring off one-on-one with the top two of other groups, and so on until quarter final, semi-finals and a final became possible. As expected, the event played to a brazenly partisan crowd: the candidates for the ultimate pairing were two homegrown boys, Dante Alighieri and Giacomo Leopardi, with the latter the dark-horse winner.James Joyce, the favourite of the North American press in its versions of the game, for once was nowhere in sight.Italian-Canadianists did not indulge, but perhaps they should.Perhaps they should have publicly posed the fateful query about who are the top Italian-Canadian writers of the century or of the millennium.Surely, if the right archives were carefully canvassed, the right foundational manuscripts (charter manuscripts, so to speak) would not fail to surface. It shouldn't be too difficult to conjure up a twefth-or thirteenth-century Italian parchment jumbled in credible parlance, with a bit of Florentine dialect, a bit of Provengal, a bit of Latin and a visible enough spattering of Anglo-Saxon to qualify it as Canadian, a text left around, no doubt, by some enterprising young man (or woman) who, tired of travelling by land, strayed from the caravan of one of the distant cousins of

Machine scores (provisional)

The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.

Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
