Abstract

fetched live from OpenAlex

That elegant building situated at 136 Beverley Street at the corner of Dundas Street has a peculiar history of its own which reflects in many ways the history of the Italian community of Toronto.Constructed in 1872, it has served, in turn, as: the home of a wealthy English family in Toronto; an Italian community centre and the seat of the Vice Consulate of Italy; the barracks of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police; an immigrant aid and training centre; and finally the offices of the Consulate General of Italy.Throughout its dramatic history, representatives of every class of society have walked through the portals of this three-storey white brick villa, built when the high Victorian style had reached the peak of its popularity in Canada.' Chudleigh, the name given by its first owner, George Lissant Beardmore, to commemorate the town of his birth, in Devonshire, between Exeter and Plymouth, remains "the first of the Beverley Street mansions ... still the most impressive house on the street."? George Lissant Beardmore (1818-1893) acquired the Chudleigh land about 1870 in the fashionable neighbourhood of The Grange,' erected at the prestigious end of Beverley Street. In 1873 he took possession of his 35-room home with a household of 12 including his wife, four sons, his brother Walter and wife, plus four servants. He had risen from the rank of a simple employee in a tannery in Thornhill, Ontario, to fur merchant and president of the Dominion Lumber Company.Chudleigh has been described as "that quintessential Victorian building", built in the Italianate style with a high French roof, (Tooke, p.1).The name, BeardmoreBuilding, the former warehouse and office of the family business, has been retained and may still be seen, just above the store fronts of 35-39 Front Street East.

Not calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. Learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and 10,348 direct Gemma labels. Candidate is the union of thresholded teacher heads; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels or direct frontier model labels.

Machine scores (provisional)

The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.

Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
