Valeria Sestieri LeeLe voci bibliografiche aventi a che fare con l' immigrazione degli italiani in Canada e con gli italo-canadesi hanno raggiunto un numero ragguardevole ed anche in Alberta ci sono stati e ci sono ricercatori!che hanno rivolto la loro attenzione a questo gruppo etnico del mosaico nazionale.Recentemente in tutto il paese l'interesse di alcuni ricercatori?si è andato focalizzando sulla componente "donna" del fenomeno immigratorio e il presente numero di /talian Canadiana lo comprova.A Calgary questa messa a fuoco avvenne incidentalmente quando nell'estate del 1985 il Calgary Italian Club ricevette dei fondi dallo S.T.E.P. Program per intervistare dei "pionieri": in quattordici delle ventisei interviste condotte da due studentesse, le voci sono voci di donne intervistate più spesso individualmente, qualche volta insieme al marito.Altre interviste sono state condotte nell'87 e nell'88 da altri intervistatori e pure in queste troviamo una componente femminile.3Quanti italiani ci sono oggi in Alberta e dove li troviamo?I dati del censimento del 1991 di Statistics Canada sono i seguenti: 24.745 italiani in Alberta dei quali 10.725 a Calgary e 10.455 a Edmonton; dei rimanenti 3.565 non si dà conto in StatisticsCanada, però a Lethbridge c'è sempre stata una comunità numericamente piccola, ma antica e qualche famiglia la si può trovare in altri centri minori come quelli del Crow's Nest Pass.4 Il quadro generale della presenza degli italiani nella provincia può, a questo punto, venir chiarito fornendo un breve cenno storico sul come si sono formate le comunità.Nell'ultimo decennio del secolo scorso parecchi operai italiani che lavoravano per la Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) si stabilirono nel sud dell' Alberta e della Columbia Britannica; in questo stesso periodo la maggior parte dei "sojourners" italiani si diresse alle cittadine minerarie
