Abstract

fetched live from OpenAlex

Aside from its size-a scant eighty pages-there is nothing light about Italian-Canadian author Carole David's Unholy Stories. It is a dense, dark and deeply unsettling collection of twelve short stories, some no more than five pages long. The conciseness of the text is a refreshing balance to their distressingly weighty material-David's subjects careen from drug addiction to self-mutilation, disfigurement to incest, teen pregnancy to elder abuse. The tone of David's many narrators is bitter and brooding, and only intermittently spattered with hope; to drag out the narrative any longer would render it so dreary as to be practically unbearable. As it is, these twelve unholy stories are more like voyeuristic glances: sometimes hazy, often perverse, but always fascinating.David's work has been met with a substantial amount of acclaim.La Maison

Not calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. The Gemma side is a direct model label for every work in the frame, read from the title-only record. The Codex side is a classifier learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and calibrated to design-weighted sample rates; fields without enough sample support carry no Codex call. Candidate is the union of the two sides; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels.

Machine scores (provisional)

The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.

Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
