Abstract
As far back as I can remember, we would drive down on a Sunday afternoon from our home in northern New Jersey, to Fairhaven, to where my grandfather lived, alone, in a house guarded by two stone lions.The lions were watchful as we pulled into grandpa's long black driveway all the way to the back porch, where grandpa stood, waving and smiling at us.After a toast of his homemade wine, and games of pinochle played on the green formica table in his kitchen, we children emerged from dark shrouds of grandpa's cigar smoke out onto the green, sunny, front lawn to feed the stone lions berries from the bushes nearby.Placing each berry gingerly inside their opened jaws, next to the bulbs which illuminated their fierce faces at night, we sensed the lions' awareness that they were receiving a most treasured offering.Just as we recognized the sacredness of the pure white Host of Holy Communion, they knew the berries to be a secret, sacred fruit, shared only with those most loyal to and most trusted by our family.The lions fed, we would then go out back to grandpa's garden to pick the salad for our supper.Inside the kitchen, my mother would start the macaroni water, its
