Abstract

fetched live from OpenAlex

Traveling between diverse dimensions, in his book, The Cousin, John Calabro offers startling images, disquieting insights into Freudian-like psyches, sexually distinctive experiences, and culturally nostalgic and realistic sentiments of a Sicily of the present and of the past. The story, in which every component (words, settings, characters, themes, narrator) fulfills an indispensable and never unnecessary function, opens with a husband and a wife, Salvatore and Susan, traveling throughout Sicily. The English reader immediately relates to Susan's ingenuousness of Italy and her longing to embrace this foreign and largely mysterious Sicilian culture: "This trip had been Susan's idea more than mine, a beach holiday in Sicily where she could also discover a bit more about me, and I was already regretting it" (7).The reader immediately relates to Salvatore's closed emotions and his ultimate candour: "Unlike me, who, according to Susan, for a Sicilian, showed very little emotion. In her opinion, I could stand to be a bit more expressive, even more demonstrative, and maybe shouldn't try to hide my feelings all the time" ( 23).John Calabro, by means of the characters of Susan and Salvatore, outlines the two most essential struggles that plague humans at various stages in life: the external and internal struggles.Throughout the novel, Susan's discovery of a new world is constantly interwoven with the attempts of Charlie (Salvatore's cousin) to find a new self.In the narrative, there is also a constant reminder of the story of the Italian immigrants in the pursuit of a new home in Canada (resembling Susan's external struggle in Sicily) as well as the memories and internal struggles of a past life in Sicily before leaving: "He says that my mother and father were very different but I am not sure that they were all that different. In Canada, they acted the same way, dispassionate and superficial [...].It was a mistake coming back; I didn't want to re-open those wounds" (40).Thus,

Not calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. The Gemma side is a direct model label for every work in the frame, read from the title-only record. The Codex side is a classifier learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and calibrated to design-weighted sample rates; fields without enough sample support carry no Codex call. Candidate is the union of the two sides; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels.

Machine scores (provisional)

The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.

Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
