Letto il libro di Michele Campanini non si può non provare un sentimento di sollievo intellettuale: finalmente uno studio che non affronta con pompose statistiche, con impietose analisi linguistiche, con scimmiottamenti antropologici o etnografici, il fenomeno della prima emigrazione italiana d'oltreoceano.Chi, infatti, abbia avuto modo di frequentare la produzione a riguardo, ha dovuto destreggiarsi tra aride ricostruzioni storiche oppure tra avventurose disamine della lingua dell'emigrazione, spesso succubi delle mode linguistiche o sociolinguistiche nordamericane.Non che tale saggistica sia inutile, ma si avvertiva, tutto sommato, la mancanza di un testo che coniugasse passione, indagine letteraria e coscienza storica in maniera disinvolta, senza timori di confondere
