Abstract
A differenza di altri romanzi di Carmine Abate che si concludono con la morte o il ferimento dei protagonisti (Il ballo tondo, 1991; La moto di Scanderbeg, 1999; Tra due mari, 2002; La festa del ritorno, 2004), La collina del vento, vincitore del Premio Campiello 2012, inizia con un duplice omicidio: "Gli spari erano sembrati l'inizio di un fuoco d'artificio in pieno giorno, con un'eco secca e irreale, risucchiata dal mare" (Abate 9)1.Subito i tre fratellini Arcuri si precipitarono verso il luogo per capire che cosa era successo, ma fu solo Arturo, il più coraggioso, che all'epoca aveva otto anni, a raggiungere la cima della collina e a vedere riversi per terra il corpo di due uomini.Il piccolo avrebbe voluto parlarne ai suoi fratellini Michele e Angelo, ma i genitori lo costrinsero a mantenere la "promessa" di non dire niente a nessuno.E così il movente del duplice omicidio rimane oscuro e tiene noi lettori (e Arturo) con il fiato sospeso fino alla fine del romanzo.La besa, la parola data (valore sacro per uno scrittore di origine arbéreshe come Abate) è il tema dominante del capitolo Promesse che funge da prologo al romanzo: "'La promessa è promessa' ripeteva la madre" (12).Dopo quattro pagine il lettore viene però spinto a un salto temporale di quattro generazioni ed è catapultato dalle vicende del duplice omicidio che risalgono al 1902, a uno degli ultimi incontri, che ha luogo ai giorni nostri, tra il narratore Rino e suo padre Michelangelo? .
