When mononuclear aromatics are produced from heavier material than naphtha, it is necessary to reduce the molecular mass of the products relative to that of the feed. Although it is in principal possible to convert distillate range material into aromatics, this boiling fraction is usually reserved for transport fuel production. Heavier petroleum-derived material in practice refers mainly to atmospheric residue, and both thermal and catalytic conversion processes can be employed to produce aromatic products. There are also other raw materials that be converted to products containing mononuclear aromatics, such as coal and biomass and organic wastes, including plastic wastes. The conversion chemistry and process technologies are discussed, pointing out the benefits and limitations of each as technology for producing aromatics.
