Unlike the mononuclear aromatics, the production capacity for purified bi- and tri-nuclear aromatic hydrocarbons is more limited. The production capacity of pure naphthalene is of the order 10 6 t/a, and that of pure anthracene is of the order 10 4 t/a. Other bi- and tri-nuclear aromatic hydrocarbons are purified at capacities one or more orders of magnitude less. The market size for naphthalene and anthracene are determined predominantly by use in production of phthalic anhydride and anthraquinone, respectively. Naphthalene is industrially produced from coal tar by separation, as well as from refined petroleum by hydrodealkylation and separation. Anthracene is industrially produced only from coal tar by separation. The physical and aromatic properties of bi- and tri-nuclear aromatic hydrocarbons that affect separation and reactivity are discussed. An overview of the industrial production of bi- and tri-nuclear aromatics is provided with a discussion of the conversion and separation steps required.
