Abstract
Cet article se propose d’analyser l’interprétation de Charles-François Mazurier du primate protagoniste de la pièce Jocko, ou le singe du Brésil, de Gabriel Lurieu et Edmond Rochefort (1825), au théâtre de la Porte Saint-Martin de Paris. À partir des chroniques de l’époque, nous entreprendrons l’étude de la transgression du « quatrième mur » que fit l’acteur par le biais de ses acrobaties : ce dernier agissait tel un singe en liberté, bondissant de l’avant-scène aux loges, se promenant à quatre pattes sur le balcon, interagissant directement avec son public, ou dérobant leurs objets personnels. Nous éluciderons donc la transformation sémiotique et symbolique de la salle qu’engendrent ces manoeuvres. Devenu une ménagerie improvisée, le théâtre de la Porte Saint-Martin permit aux spectateurs d’entrer en contact avec un animal exotique incarné par un homme, dont le jeu rend compte des discours scientifiques et populaires du premier tiers du dix-neuvième siècle sur la nature sauvage des quadrumanes, et des tentatives de l’humain pour les maîtriser.
