Au Québec, l’accès en 2015 à l’aide médicale à mourir (AMM) grâce à l’entrée en vigueur de la Loi concernant les soins de fin de vie a introduit un nouveau paradigme en santé (Viens, 2017). L’AMM devient un événement incontournable dans la compréhension de l’expérience de la personne malade qui choisit d’y recourir et de celle de la famille qui l’accompagne, le cas échéant. À ce jour, rares sont les écrits québécois proposant une compréhension de l’expérience d’accompagnement et de deuil des familles qui ont accompagné un proche en fin de vie ayant reçu l’AMM. Cette étude exploratoire cherche à 1) décrire les répercussions de l’AMM sur l’expérience individuelle et familiale des membres de la famille ayant perdu un des leurs en contexte d’AMM, 2) préciser les éléments qui contribuent ou nuisent à leur adaptation au moment de la perte et à la suite du décès. Dans le cadre de cette étude qualitative, des entretiens semi-dirigés auprès de 20 proches ont été réalisés. Les connaissances ainsi obtenues peuvent contribuer au développement de stratégies d’intervention préventives visant à soutenir les proches qui vivent la perte d’un proche dans ce contexte particulier.
