Lorsqu’on les compare aux cinq lettres invectives qui forment le deuxième volet du recueil d’Epistres familieres et invectives publié sous le nom d’Hélisenne de Crenne en 1539, les treize brèves lettres familières peuvent sembler simples au premier abord, mais se révèlent complexes sur le plan stylistique lorsqu’on les examine plus attentivement. En effet, de nombreux passages font appel à une écriture de nature elliptique et allusive qui ne se retrouve pas au même degré dans les autres ouvrages d’Hélisenne. De tels raccourcis référentiels peuvent se comprendre à la lumière des paramètres génériques de l’épître familière, qui postule un lien entre les correspondants permettant l’usage de sous-entendus et de périphrases. Cet article vise à éclairer la nature de ces traits stylistiques et à décrire la couleur particulière qu’elle confère à un genre réputé à la Renaissance pour sa plasticité.
