No texto analiso alguns obstáculos para a consumação das leis dietéticas judaicas ou kashrut na contemporaneidade. O foco é a circulação de carne não-kasher, isto é, de carne não idônea para o consumo dos judeus em comunidades ortodoxas de Israel e do Brasil. Essa situação, como mínimo preocupante, é correlato do maltrato sistemático dos animais para consumo nas modernas granjas e frigoríficos. As consequências desse fenômeno são várias, entre as quais têm destaque uma fragmentação da ortodoxia judaica e o questionamento do status dos judeus como povo escolhido, fator constitutivo da cosmovisão judaica tradicional.
