Abstract
Cet article explore les variantes ainsi que les limites de ce qu’il nomme la thanatologie du catholicisme canadien-français et québécois. Il recense trois de ces thèses, celles que l’on trouve le plus fréquemment dans la littérature intellectuelle. Pour chacune d’elles, il étudie les indicateurs retenus pour poser le diagnostic, la période de référence utilisée pour mesurer le déclin et, en cela, la norme religieuse retenue comme barème. Il s’agit, chemin faisant, d’étudier la construction intellectuelle contemporaine de l’objet catholique. En creux de cet article, le lecteur trouvera un plaidoyer pour l’étude du catholicisme tel qu’il existe ici et maintenant.
