Cet article analyse les fonctions de la prison au Cameroun à partir d’une mise en débat de la pensée de Philippe Combessie dans la sociologie carcérale. Il procède dans un premier temps à une confrontation des fonctions classiques de la prison au contexte africain afin de dégager les continuités et les ruptures ; puis dans un second temps, il énonce une autre fonction de la prison, celle de domination analysée dans l’expérience coloniale et postcoloniale de la prison. L’analyse recourt à l’histoire et au néofonctionnalisme pour rendre compte de la manière dont le modèle-prison s’est diffusé dans les colonies pour servir l’impérialisme occidental et sa réappropriation par les ordres politiques des États indépendants africains. Il se dégage de cette étude que si l’universalité de la prison peut être affirmée, son historicité est à comprendre en la resituant dans les multiples expériences de sa traduction dans chaque continent.
