Abstract
Cet article porte sur la représentation du personnage d’Élisabeth I ère , à la fois reine et amoureuse, dans Le comte d’Essex (1639) de La Calprenède. Il se propose d’étudier les paroles proférées par Élisabeth, l’éloquence de son corps et les discours mis en scène dans cette tragédie afin de voir comment ils construisent l’image d’une souveraine toute-puissante, mais également celle d’une amante méprisée et trahie. Délaissant la rhétorique épidictique du blâme ou de l’éloge, l’écrivain entend montrer qu’Élisabeth est une reine problématique puisque sa conduite n’est pas irréprochable. En effet, elle est un personnage complexe, puisque si Élisabeth I ère est admirable par son esprit, sa bonté et ses vertus politiques, elle est condamnable par l’amour coupable qu’elle éprouve pour le comte d’Essex.
