Abstract
The movement of people from one place to another may be studied in different ways.In this paper, one type of migration will be presented from a geographical point of view.The experience of one immigrant will be set in the context of Canada's geography in the period 1907 to 1916.Immigration from Europe to North America in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries may be divided into three phases, each with its own distinctive geography, based on spatial and environmental conditions.In the first phase, the geography of the homeland set the stage.The migrant departed, taking with him the cultural baggage of ideas and abilities born and nurtured in his home environment.The second phase introduced a new set of spatial perceptions.The voyage, for most, was a dramatic rite of passage, a movement across a vast distance,
