Abstract

fetched live from OpenAlex

In 1872 the number of Italians in Canada totalled 150, 75 of whom lived in Montreal; by 1881 there were enough bricklayers, carpenters, iron workers and other manual labourers to meet the demand, but there was still room for good farmers, according to John Zucchi.Achille Alessandro Nobile, who describes himself on the title page of his books as a teacher of French and Italian, with a B.A. and a Bachelor of Philosophy degree, and appeared out of nowhere in Toronto in 1873, disappearing from public view around 1885, was neither a farmer nor a labourer. He was an atypical immigrant of that time who made a valiant effort to win recognition in his newly adopted country.Nobile does not belong to that class of Italian exile who left Italy for political reasons to seek freedom and a new life in the new world. He resembles the post second world war Italian immigrants who came to Canada with a good educational background, but unlike them, was alone, with no peers. The University of Toronto library catalogue lists his date of birth as 1833.Nobile tells us that he was born

Not calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. Learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and 10,348 direct Gemma labels. Candidate is the union of thresholded teacher heads; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels or direct frontier model labels.

Machine scores (provisional)

The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.

Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
