Las especies del género Mangifera tienen su centro de diversidad y origen en el Sudeste Asiático, una región que ha experimentado un gran desarrollo económico en los últimos años.Extensas áreas boscosas han sido deforestadas total o parcialmente para expandir la agricultura o para la explotación de maderas duras tropicales con fines de exportación.La distribución de cultivos de mango fuera de sus centros de cultivos se puede atribuir principalmente a tres eventos históricos: 1) el movimiento de variedades indias (monoembriónicas) a lo largo de las rutas comerciales de los portugueses a África y Suramérica; 2) la propagación de las variedades del Sudeste Asiático (poliembriónicas), a través del océano Pacífico, a Centro y Suramérica por los españoles, y 3) la identificación de cultivares mejorados de mango, inicialmente en Florida y luego en otras nuevas áreas productoras de mango, como resultado de polinización entre germoplasmas de mango locales (Mukherjee & Litz, 2009).Sobre este último evento histórico, se puede decir que el mejoramiento genético del cultivo hasta ahora ha dependido de la utilización de la variabilidad genética encontrada en una sola especie (Mangifera indica).Por su parte, Mukherjee et al.
