Comptant parmi les romans les plus fameux du XXe siècle, ayant suscité autant d’interprétations que de vocations, Le Tambour (Die Blechtrommel) de Günter Grass (paru en 1959) offre une source inépuisable de réflexions sur la responsabilité et la culpabilité du sujet moral et des collectivités, à la croisée des chemins entre éthique, esthétique et philosophie de l’histoire. En offrant une succession de « coupes transversales » dans le roman, après avoir explicité le cadre théorique de l’approche proposée, le présent article met en évidence la manière dont le recours à la forme grotesque permet à Grass de trouver le ton « juste » d’une histoire racontée « par en bas ». Justesse du ton, justesse du style, exactitude des images : le grotesque grassien entend paradoxalement dire ce qu’il en a été « vraiment » de l’histoire passée à jamais non réitérable, et ce, à même l’entreprise de prime abord antinomique d’une déformation et d’une défiguration des images. Ainsi seulement la justesse de sa vue pourra « rendre justice » de l’histoire. Le Tambour contribue à rouvrir la possibilité du jugement moral sur l’histoire, mais aussi sur la multiplicité des instanciations singulières du « faire histoire » par les sujets. L’étrange tribunal constitué, ou plutôt joué, par le récit ahurissant de la vie d’Oskar Matzerath « rend possible » – pour le dire d’une formule kantienne précisément détournée – le jugement moral, en restituant aux sujets, dont la sensibilité a été anesthésiée par la guerre, par la propagande nazie, par l’accoutumance aux dénis et aux dénégations, le pouvoir et l’obligation d’être « justes » à l’égard de « leur » histoire.
