Abstract
The dominant discourse about the environment in popular culture and the academy at this present juncture relates to climate change and its impact on economic, social and political life. Within leisure studies there is a growing awareness and intensifying conscience about the potential environmental threat posed by the continued and unmanaged economic growth and development of sport, tourism and leisure. Mark Stoddart’s paper explores the connections between tourism, leisure and environmental conflict comparing two Canadian sites: the proposed Jumbo Glacier Ski Resort and the Tobeatic Wilderness Area. Mike Collins brings a long-term perspective to understanding temporal changes in policy towards noisy sports focusing on access for users in the Lake District National Park in the UK. Bruce Erickson’s paper develops an analysis and critique of recreational activism rooted in the relationship between outdoor recreation and environmental politics.
