Abstract
Soulignée par Willibald Sauerländer en 2000, l’absence de la polychromie dans la bibliographie consacrée à la sculpture médiévale française semble constituer un phénomène persistant, en dépit des études de cas parues, ces vingt dernières années, à l’occasion de restaurations. Parmi les explications déjà apportées à ce silence, la présente étude propose une approche historiographique, peu développée jusqu’à présent. Dominée par le formalisme et la théorie focillonienne, l’histoire de la sculpture médiévale a longtemps privilégié l’art de la taille et le rapport tridimensionnel avec l’architecture. Alors qu’elle avait été prise en compte sous la monarchie de Juillet, la polychromie se trouva ainsi refoulée, dès la fin du xixe siècle, hors du cadre théorique qui s’imposa tout au long du siècle suivant.
