Abstract
BACKGROUND-AIMSynovial fluid has, under normal conditions high viscosity due to the hyaluronic acid (HA) presence.HA is a high molecular weight polysaccharide made up of repeating units of D-glucuronic acid and N-acetyl-D-glucosamine.In inflammatory pathologies, the HA is destroyed due to the neutrophil's hyaluronidase, decreasing the viscosity of the liquid.The high viscosity of some synovial fluids is a frequent problem in the clinical laboratory because the analyzers cannot correctly pipette the sample to perform biochemical determinations.Among the possible solutions to decrease the viscosity are the liquid dilution or the addition of the hyaluronidase enzyme.
