Abstract
Jewish continuity has a core of meaning which is very familiar to anyone who worries about the long-term survival of an authentic Jewish community, although the terminology may have shifted. Jewish demographers are obviously interested in phenomena such as mixed marriages or the extent to which Jewish families are oneparent rather than two-parent, because these family structures are a part of the modern scene which—from the standpoint of Jewish survival into the future—presents some major threats. Jews in different communities are influenced or affected by the larger social environment, yet the Jewish statistics remain significantly different in a number of respects from the general Canadian pattern. This is most evident in Toronto and Montreal, but still appears even in the smaller communities across the country. Internal migration to Vancouver is also a part of the demographic problem there.
