An original perspective: Individuals with an absence of observer-like perspectives are less susceptible to memory reconstruction

Abstract
For most people, the capacity to adopt alternative visual perspectives when remembering emerges spontaneously due to the reconstructive nature of memories. As memories become more remote and are vulnerable to distortions, there is a shift in the perspective of memories from own eyes to observer-like vantage points. Yet not all individuals report adopting novel perspectives in memories. The current research examines how the absence of observer-like perspectives influences autobiographical memory retrieval (Study 1: N = 201; Study 2: N = 211). Individuals with an absence of observer-like perspectives maintained their original perspective during remembering and lacked the typical shift in perspective with memory remoteness. The absence of observer-like perspectives was associated with enhanced scene-related aspects of remembering, along with superior spatial visualization ability. Together these findings offer insights into individual differences in the malleability of memories, and the central role that our original perspective plays in preserving the personal past.
