Abstract
Ataque de varios contra uno: así define el Diccionario de la Lengua Española, la expresión chilena con que, bajo el nombre de cuadrillazo, se califica una imaginada coalición urdida por la Argentina, Perú y los Estados Unidos, para atacar a Chile. La versión se inserta en la serie de referencias, suposiciones e hipótesis que circularon en los ámbitos diplomáticos en el curso de un proceso que mostraba indicios de que los Estados Unidos se preparaba para una guerra con Chile. El antecedente inmediato de esta situación se encuadra en un grave conflicto suscitado entre los Estados Unidos y el gobierno chileno como consecuencia de un incidente que ocurre en Valparaíso el 16 de octubre de 1891. Chilenos y marinos norteamericanos se enfrentaron en una lucha que tuvo vastas proyecciones. Muchos de los que intervinieron en la refriega fueron heridos. Dos tripulantes del barco de guerra "Baltimore" resultaron muertos. La reacción del gobierno de Washington fue rápida. Se manifestó con energía y se hizo tangible en avanzados aprestos bélicos. El presidente Benjamín Harrison consideró que se había consumado un ataque inspirado en la animosidad que existía contra los Estados Unidos, por estimarse que dio sostén al derrocado presidente Balmaceda. Quedó instalado el disenso.
