Les historiens contribuent à la construction de la mémoire collective. Cependant, par le biais d’enquêtes méthodiques, leur apport diffère souvent de celui d’autres intervenants. S’ils peuvent être aussi des citoyens engagés, les historiens doivent pratiquer une nécessaire mise à distance. Or, cet équilibre est difficile à maintenir dans les communautés francophones minoritaires. Marginalisées sous plus d’un aspect, ces dernières sont constamment à la recherche de justice et de reconnaissance. Dans leurs combats, les porte-parole des minorités multiplient les références à l’ancrage profond des francophones dans le territoire et à leurs luttes héroïques, croyant ou voulant croire que « la communauté » a toujours été unanime. Le présent article vise à saisir les rapports qu’entretiennent la mémoire et l’histoire au sein des communautés francophones minoritaires. Pour ce faire, l’auteur s’appuie sur les travaux d’historiens d’ici et d’ailleurs qui ont étudié la question, et il illustre ses propos en donnant des exemples récents. Partiellement analytique, l’article se veut également un témoignage qui repose sur diverses expériences de l’auteur en Ontario français.
