Abstract
How do the arts of architecture and dramatic storytelling arise and interrelate? This interview reflects on a recent example of intertwined storytelling, space-making, and community building, resulting in a new theatrical production, which grew from restorative exchanges shared around a fire and spurred by the storm of pandemic strife in the summer of 2020. Janus/In Time was created by a Winnipeg-based collective: theatre director Jacqueline Loewen, Bharatanatyam dancer Avinash Muralidharan Pillai Saralakumari, architectural designer David Thomas and lighting designer Scott Henderson. Friendly greetings across an alleyway developed into a dramatic adventure combining transdisciplinary and cross-cultural practices of modern drama, classical Indian dance, and Indigenous design. In this work, the ambiguous god of thresholds and connections leaps into action on timely topics, intersectional agencies, cultural fusions, and the magical powers of socially constructive and spiritually rejuvenating arts.
