Trois graveurs étaient membres de la quatrième classe de l’Institut – consacrée aux Beaux-Arts – en 1803, bientôt rejoints par un quatrième maître de l’estampe en 1816. Depuis, quarante-trois artistes – graveurs exclusifs ou non, certains gravant pour l’estampe et d’autres non – se sont succédé aux quatre fauteuils qui composent la quatrième section de l’Académie des beaux-arts.
