Cet article examine la figure de la travailleuse du sexe telle qu’elle est représentée dans la culture imprimée à sensation du Québec des années 1940 et 1950. Il se concentre sur deux périodes successives de l’histoire de la culture imprimée québécoise : d’abord, la période 1942-1947, représentée par le périodique Police Journal , qui, à mi-chemin entre le journal et le magazine, propose un regard réformiste sur la moralité du Québec avec des reportages sensationnalistes sur la criminalité et le vice ; ensuite, les journaux jaunes des années 1950, qui exploitent, à des fins sensationnalistes, les transgressions de la légalité en matière de commerce sexuel. Dans le passage entre ces deux périodes et ces deux corpus, la figure de la prostituée urbaine évolue : elle est d’abord le symbole d’un problème d’hygiène sociale puis devient une figure criminelle génératrice de récits d’action individuelle et d’agentivité.
