Cet article propose une lecture critique du Maître ignorant de Jacques Rancière. Devant les inégalités scolaires passées et actuelles, une question persiste et nous tenterons d’y répondre : est-ce que les processus de subjectivation des enfants doivent passer par les contraintes d’une autorité adulte ? Pour Rancière, « la vertu d’ignorance est d’abord une vertu de dissociation », c’est-à-dire que l’émancipation intellectuelle commande une séparation entre maîtrise et savoir. Le maître igno-rant n’ignore pas tout, il ignore les raisons sociales de l’inégalité. Cette posture politique est anti-institutionnelle. Seul l’individu peut s’émanciper et l’école n’a jamais émancipé personne, écrit ce philosophe. Dès lors, quelles sont les conditions sociales de l’autonomie ? Ce n’est pas sans danger que les adultes en position d’autorité se désengagent de leurs devoirs au nom d’un laisser-faire qui naturalise les rapports hors des institutions. Nous pensons que Rancière n’échappe pas à la contradiction qui conduit à empêcher l’émancipation au nom de l’égalité. Cela n’enlève rien à sa capacité d’identifier des problèmes scolaires qui semblent encore à ce jour insolubles.
