Abstract
Cet article se saisit de l’oeuvre de Judith Butler pour interpréter la signification sociologique de la théorie du genre. La première partie est consacrée à présenter le réseau des concepts butlériens et à en expliciter les principales articulations. L’absence de fondement phénoménologique et historique et la visée purement déconstructiviste de la pensée de Butler ressortent de cette première approche. La deuxième partie s’attarde à montrer à quel point Butler méconnaît la modernité spécifique de l’idée d’assomption du genre, pourtant centrale chez elle. On passe alors à une critique épistémologique et sociohistorique de ses catégories. La troisième partie, en s’écartant du commentaire de Butler, entend montrer que l’épuisement de la dialectique moderne de subjectivisation du genre fournit sa condition de possibilité à la théorie du genre en ayant réalisé la possibilité de se débarrasser des sexes. Dans cette perspective, la théorie du genre apparaît comme la poursuite inconsciente, dans les deux sens du terme, de la logique d’abstraction moderne, en convergence avec un possible arraisonnement technologique du vivant.
