Les sciences de la gestion américaines sont à l’heure d’un bilan : quelle est l’efficacité du programme diversité, équité, inclusion (DEI, anciennement D&I) et des programmes similaires adoptés, selon Leslie Sklair, dès les années 1990 par les entreprises globales de haut niveau ? Comment « l’industrie DEI » et « les nouvelles professions de la DEI » pourront-elles généraliser l’augmentation de la compétiti- vité des organisations qui pratiquent la diversité de genre (+21 %) ou la diversité ethnique et de genre (+33 %), ou la capacité des équipes diversifiées (selon l’âge, le genre et l’ethnie) de prendre de meilleures décisions (dans 87 % des cas), comme le soutient le cabinet de consultants internationaux Global Diversity Practice ? Comment les performances des CDO ( chief diversity officers ) se traduisent-elles dans la société quand on sait que 35 % des investissements émotionnels (?!) des employés sont associés au sentiment d’être inclus, selon une étude de la firme Catalyst en 2020 ? C’est sur le fond de la multiplication des cabinets de tuteurs, de mentors et de coachs internationaux qui implantent ces pratiques managériales que l’article examine les transformations sociales et politiques plus générales qui ont rendu possible la convergence (et la confusion) entre un programme de gestion du personnel visant à accroître les rendements et une quête morale qui tend à légiti- mer une nouvelle forme (verticale) de la démocratie sociale.
