Sfogliando i "curricula vitae" dei professori d'italiano che nei primi trent'anni di questo secolo insegnarono all'Università di Toronto, notiamo che le loro ricerche furono in maggior parte concentrate sul Medio Evo e sul Rinascimento o tutt'al più sulla didattica dell'insegnamento linguistico, mentre il primo Novecento fu da loro totalmente ignorato e lasciato ai posteri degli anni '60 e '70.'
