Abstract
In this chapter, a narrative understanding of displacement is taken up in relation to coming alongside an extraordinary man, Dr. Yosh Taguchi. Coming alongside Yosh, the authors attend to his experiences of Japanese internment in Canada and the lingering reverberations that are carried forward. A narrative inquiry approach is employed as a means of inquiring into Yosh’s stories of experiences as a young child, youth, and adult in a time of war and strife. Made visible in this relational process are the ways in which Yosh’s stories of identity were shaped by the challenging experiences he underwent throughout his life as a survivor of Canadian Japanese internment. Revisiting stories of identity and displacement nested within familial, intergenerational, cultural, and national narratives enabled us to metaphorically travel to Yosh’s worlds.
