Cette réflexion souligne l’importance de l’hypotypose dans le Mozi d’un point de vue argumentatif et gnoséologique. Les moïstes se prévaudraient de cette figure de rhétorique afin de montrer le bien-fondé de leurs doctrines, en formulant des descriptions frappantes et énergiques de faits réels ou d’événements imaginaires. La force illocutoire de l’hypotypose est par exemple exploitée afin de critiquer la guerre offensive et de prôner les croyances relatives aux esprits ainsi que la modération dans les rites funéraires. Il est à noter que le figural et le conceptuel forment une dyade dynamique plutôt qu’une dichotomie rigide. Ces considérations pourraient apporter un nouvel éclairage sur la question de savoir si la pensée chinoise ancienne est imagée.
