Abstract
Dans Les Mohicans de Paris, Alexandre Dumas construit un portrait de la foule original et étroitement lié aux enjeux fondamentaux de cet imposant roman. La foule y prend divers visages, Dumas la présentant comme un « simple » rassemblement de personnes, comme une émeute destructrice et comme l’opinion publique changeante. L’article analyse chacun de ces visages pour en venir à exposer comment le romancier retourne sur lui-même, d’une manière aussi logique qu’étonnante, le motif ressassé de la violence traditionnellement associée à la foule. Sous la plume de Dumas, la foule n’est plus simplement menaçante comme on la représente généralement, elle devient également, en quelque sorte, menacée.
