Les bibliothèques de compositeurs, comme ensembles de textes, n’ont connu que peu d’investigations, entraînant alors un manque de reconnaissance de leurs valeurs intellectuelle et herméneutique en musicologie. Or, depuis le XIX e siècle, à la suite du développement de la musicologie et de l’appropriation de la critique musicale par les musiciens, le compositeur n’est plus seulement artisan mais penseur de son art : il se fait intellectuel. L’examen de la bibliothèque de Vincent d’Indy (1851–1931), joint à celui de ses écrits, permet de préciser une dynamique intellectuelle propre à ce compositeur, et plus précisément de révéler la dimension épique primordiale à la bibliothèque qui se situe ainsi à l’origine d’une réflexion croisée sur l’épopée littéraire et ce que d’Indy nomme « l’épopée musicale ».
