Cet article est un essai d’interprétation du parcours identitaire que certains membres de la communauté italienne de Montréal ont expérimenté en tant que parents et enfants dans le second après-guerre. L’auteur propose un détour, passant par le projet migratoire des parents, ses modifications et les liens qu’il entretient avec les migrations du début du siècle, afin de faire ressortir comment l’expérience ethnique dans la société d’arrivée peut être façonnée par les aspirations à l’origine de la traversée de l’océan. La migration s’avère être ainsi un phénomène complexe et contradictoire qui englobe celui de l’ethnicité et qui conditionne les rapports qui nouent et opposent à la fois l’identité nationale et l’identité locale.
