Abstract
The Order of the Sons of Italy was introduced into Canada during the Great War from the United States where it was founded in 1905 by Dr. Vincent Sellaro and a group of his friends.The first Canadian Lodge, the Giuseppe Verdi Lodge, was organized in Sault Ste.Marie, Ontario, in 1915 or 1916.'After the war, enhanced by a wave of patriotic excitment which submerged the Italian community as a consequence of the Italian victory over the Austrian Empire, the Order expanded rapidly in Ontario and Quebec.The objective of the Order suited well the new awareness and self-confidence of the Italians in Canada.The purpose of the Order was, in fact, according to Ernesto Biagi, one of its leading members for many years, "to gather the Italian immigrants of the United States and Canada into a single, great organization in order to defend them and to have them assert themselves and their rights by putting an end to an unjust discrimination."Knowing that political and religious division and profound regional diversity existed among the Italian immigrants, the founding members of the Order decided that the incipient association should be apolitical and nondenominational in nature and that each lodge should retain the autonomy to follow its own freely chosen activities.Each lodge, however, had the duty, according to the Constitution, "to contribute to keeping alive the flame of the cult of = fia =
