In this text, the navigational directions laid out in Dionne Brand’s seminal A Map to the Door of No Return: Notes to Belonging (2001) provide the space for the retelling of an unexpected encounter with name, place and memory. And while moving through the ebbs and flows of various time-spaces—Toronto, Mannheim, Elmina and Traiskirchen, a town close to the Austrian capital Vienna—memories of police violence and Black death, of resistance and imagining and ultimately of belonging wash up on its shores.
