La iconografía de danza está presente en el día a día de la disciplina, tanto desde el punto de vista estético como académico. Aunque sí está presente en los trabajos dancísticos de otros países occidentales, el estudio de la relación entre danza y arte todavía no ha penetrado en el entorno académico español. Este trabajo se plantea como un inicio en la comparación iconográfica de la danza «extranjera» presente en el siglo xviii español y el fundamental análisis de la misma para entender las corrientes de intercambio en torno a la disciplina en España. En ese contexto, se hace evidente la necesaria creación de un sistema de codificación que permita catalogar las escenas de danza como disciplina propia dentro de las representaciones artísticas. Para contribuir en la investigación dancística, se propone un método de catalogación inspirado en el sistema musical creado por el grupo de trabajo AEDOM denominado IMAGENesMUSICA, y la creación de un sistema propio de codificación basado en The Code of Terpsichore de Carlo Blasis que permite la codificación de las posturas dancísticas en la iconografía danzada del periodo de la ilustración.
