A partir de la observación de un conjunto de autores del período colonial que he examinado en un trabajo pendiente de publicación, es posible considerar que la relación con el receptor en la época se establece bajo los criterios que a continuación procedemos a presentar. El contexto cultural en la Colonia constituye un medio difícil y agresivo, en el cual, pese a la influencia de amistades prestigiosas, el escritor se ve compelido a adoptar una actitud de precaución, que muchas veces constituye una autodefensa. En tales circunstancias, conceptos como el de lector y el de lectura presentan un campo de interés específico. Las alusiones al lector ocupan una serie de considerandos, mediante los cuales suele dividirse al receptor en lector común y lector erudito. A su vez, el lector erudito se bifurca en críticos positivos y críticos destructivos. Por su parte, la lectura es asumida como un acto de enjuiciamiento crítico que debe ser planteado tomando como base la objetividad, la imparcialidad, la prudencia, la moderación y el respeto. Se espera que la actividad crítica sea el estudio atento y prolijo de la obra en busca de lo provechoso, lo útil. Adicionalmente, un postulado frecuente es el que indica que dicho estudio deberá estar encaminado a identificar los aspectos peculiares de la configuración de la obra, no interesando las deficiencias, particularmente, sino los éxitos. En suma, se propone que el lector crítico no debe constituirse como un obstáculo que inhiba la producción de la obra o que desvirtúe la comprensión del texto.
