Abstract
129,000 people were at risk of death due to food insecurity in the Horn of Africa, Ethiopia's national aid agency has said that 3.2m people are in dire need of food supplies in the Somali region following a severe drought in nine of its 11 zones, the pro-government Fana Broadcasting Corporate website (12/3) reported.The drought has also killed over 4m livestock in the region.Kenya's privately-owned The Star website (22/3) recorded Kenya's first casualties from the prolonged drought after six people died from hunger in the northwestern Turkana county.Leaders from the county said nearly 800,000 people had been affected by the drought.An official in Turkana county government, Martin Lokeyen, said that farmlands along river banks were failing, with eight irrigation schemes set up by the government unable to ensure food security in the area.Shipments of much-needed grain arrived in the port of Mombasa on April 5th, privately-owned Business Daily website reported.The port received 21,455 tonnes of white maize from Mozambique, 22,820 tonnes of sorghum from the US and 27,998 tonnes of wheat from Canada.(BBC
